Josef Frank floor lamp
This rare mid-century floor lamp, model 2564, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The design exemplifies Frank’s distinctive approach, blending refined craftsmanship with playful material contrasts and a timeless formal language rooted in both classicism and modernity.
The lamp features a softly flared cylindrical shade made from a cream-toned translucent material, which is original to the piece. The shade’s lower rim is accented with woven trim, subtly enhancing its elegant taper. When lit, the shade diffuses light gently, producing a warm ambient glow that softly illuminates the surrounding space and casts delicate reflections on nearby surfaces.
The upright structure comprises a central rod crafted in polished brass that transitions midway into a black-lacquered section. This material and color contrast creates a balanced visual rhythm, emphasizing the verticality of the design. The combination of reflective brass and absorbing lacquer enriches the lamp’s overall depth and character.
The base is a solid brass disc, highly polished and elevated slightly by small rounded wooden feet. This detail adds delicacy by lifting the structure off the ground. The electrical housing bears the Svenskt Tenn stamp and the model number 2564, confirming the lamp’s provenance. The construction quality, detailing, and formal refinement align with Frank’s design ethos and Svenskt Tenn’s high production standards.
Josef Frank (1885–1967), an Austrian-born architect and designer who settled in Sweden in the 1930s, became a pivotal figure in Scandinavian design. His work at Svenskt Tenn introduced a humanistic, colorful modernism that combined rich materials, traditional motifs, and classical proportions. Though best known for his textiles and furniture, his lighting designs reflect the same clarity and charm.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with minor surface wear consistent with age, including light marks on the shade and base. The structure is stable, and the electrical components remain intact.
The lamp measures 152 cm in height and 43 cm in diameter, approximately 59.8 inches tall with a 16.9-inch diameter shade.
