Josef Frank floor lamps
This rare pair of floor lamps, model 2548, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamps exemplify the Scandinavian modern aesthetic through their combination of clean lines, functional elegance, and the use of refined natural materials. The structural elements include a teak wooden frame paired with a brass stem, complemented by their original green fabric lampshades.
The frame features two parallel teak uprights connected by a horizontal crossbar, creating an open rectangular form that emphasizes simplicity and structural clarity. The brass stem, which supports the lighting element, is height-adjustable, providing versatility in directing illumination. The green fabric shades have a slightly asymmetrical shape, lending a subtle sculptural dimension that enhances the organic quality characteristic of Josef Frank’s designs.
Josef Frank, an Austrian-born architect and designer who settled in Sweden, was a key figure in Scandinavian modernism. His design philosophy often embraced organic forms and a relaxed lightness, offering an alternative to the more rigid functionalism prevalent during his time. Svenskt Tenn, the Stockholm-based producer, is historically significant for its long-term collaboration with Frank and its dedication to craftsmanship and the use of premium materials.
The lamps are preserved in good vintage condition. The brass components show an attractive patina consistent with age, while the teak frames retain their original finish with only minor wear visible. The original fabric lampshades also remain intact, exhibiting slight variations in texture and color due to natural aging processes.
Each lamp measures 31 cm in width and 21 cm in depth, with the height adjustable between 100 and 138 cm (12.2 x 8.3 inches, adjustable from 39.4 to 54.3 inches), making them adaptable for various interior lighting needs while maintaining their sculptural presence.
