Josef Frank stool
This rare stool, model 967, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The frame is crafted from mahogany, displaying a warm, natural tone that complements the original patinated leather seat in a rich brown color. The leather is affixed at the corners with decorative brass studs, highlighting the piece’s handcrafted details and adding a subtle ornamental touch.
The design embodies the organic and elegant forms typical of Josef Frank’s work, featuring subtly tapered legs and a gently curved seat that enhance both comfort and aesthetic appeal. Sculpted crossbars provide structural stability while contributing to the visual balance of the stool. This model reflects Frank’s distinctive approach, which favors functionality and comfort over strict modernist minimalism, resulting in furniture with a more humanistic and inviting character.
Svenskt Tenn, established in 1924, gained a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and close artistic collaboration with Josef Frank, who significantly influenced Swedish modern design. Frank’s work merges traditional European craftsmanship with modernist principles, producing timeless and practical furniture pieces.
The stool is preserved in original condition, with the leather exhibiting an even patina that enriches its vintage character. The stool measures 45 cm in width, 28.5 cm in depth, and 41 cm in height (17.7 by 11.2 by 16.1 inches), representing a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian design.
