Kaare Klint dining table
This rare and large dining table, model 4036, was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by cabinetmaker Rud. Rasmussen in Denmark in 1928. The table is constructed in solid Cuban mahogany, a material Klint frequently selected for its density, stability, and deep warm tone. The craftsmanship reflects the high standards of Rud. Rasmussen’s workshop, with precise joinery, carefully matched grain patterns, and discreet structural detailing throughout.
The table consists of two semicircular D-ends and two rectangular center sections. This modular configuration allows the table to be used in multiple arrangements, from a compact round table to a full-length banquet setting. In its round form, the two D-ends combine to create a circular table with a diameter of 145.5 cm. When fully extended with the rectangular leaves, the table reaches a length of 515 cm while retaining the same width. The legs are straight, slightly tapered, and integrated into the apron with characteristic Klint detailing, including inset corner brackets with softened profiles. The underside reveals traditional joinery techniques and solid wood construction without reliance on metal hardware beyond structural necessities.
Kaare Klint, often regarded as the father of modern Danish furniture design, approached each piece with an emphasis on proportions, functional clarity, and long-term durability. Model 4036 exemplifies his systematic design philosophy: it is adaptable, architecturally balanced, and built with an understanding of how furniture interacts with human scale and interior space. The use of Cuban mahogany situates the table within Klint’s early output, where he favored noble hardwoods to achieve both visual and structural longevity.
The table has been refinished in a matte lacquer that enhances the natural character of the mahogany while maintaining a historically appropriate surface. It is in good condition with signs of usage and patina consistent with age, including minor wear to edges and light surface markings.
