Kai Winding chest

This rare chest or bench was designed by Kai Winding and produced by Poul Hundevad in Denmark during the 1950s. It is constructed from solid oak with inset woven cane panels, exemplifying the material-driven craftsmanship characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design. The form is rectangular and low, functioning as both a storage chest and seating bench, with a hinged lid that opens to reveal a spacious interior compartment.

The oak frame has a warm golden tone and features simple, clean lines with slightly tapered legs and softly rounded edges. The woven cane panels on the front, sides, and interior divider add both texture and lightness to the piece, contrasting subtly with the more robust timber structure. The cane is tightly woven in a traditional pattern and neatly framed by oak rails, showcasing the precision and detail of Danish cabinetmaking from the period.

Kai Winding was part of the Danish postwar design movement that emphasized functional clarity and natural materials. While primarily known for his cabinetry and storage designs, Winding collaborated with manufacturers such as Poul Hundevad—recognized for producing well-made, utilitarian furniture with restrained elegance. This bench represents an ideal of multifunctionality, suitable for use in entryways, bedrooms, or living areas, blending seating with concealed storage.

The piece is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of usage and patina consistent with age. The oak has aged evenly, and the cane surfaces are intact with only slight wear. The hinges operate smoothly, and the structure remains solid and stable.
