Kai Winding nesting tables
This very rare set of nesting tables was designed by Kai Winding and produced by Danish cabinetmaker P. Jeppesen in the 1950s. Constructed from solid and veneered rosewood, the tables showcase a rich grain pattern and deep reddish-brown color typical of high-quality Danish mid-century furniture. Each tabletop is inlaid with black Formica, providing a durable, high-contrast surface that complements the warm wood tones with visual restraint.
The tables are designed to nest seamlessly, with each piece tapering in width and height while maintaining a consistent design language. Their rectilinear forms feature gently rounded edges and slender, slightly tapering legs. The base construction is notable for its hexagonal-patterned stretchers, which enhance both structural stability and visual rhythm. A distinctive detail is found on the largest table, where one leg is finished in contrasting black lacquer—a subtle accent likely original to the design.
The condition of the set is excellent, with minimal wear consistent with careful use. The rosewood surfaces retain a well-preserved finish, and the Formica tops are free from significant marks or damage. Kai Winding, though less widely known than some contemporaries, was an accomplished designer whose work reflects the precision and material refinement characteristic of high-end Danish cabinetry during the mid-century period.
P. Jeppesen was a respected Danish cabinetmaking firm known for its meticulous craftsmanship and collaboration with prominent designers. This set embodies the quality and thoughtful design associated with their production.
The largest table measures 57 cm in width, 37 cm in depth, and 49.5 cm in height, approximately 22.4 by 14.6 by 19.5 inches. This set represents a refined example of Danish modern nesting tables, balancing functionality with elegant materials and detailing.
