Information

This very rare easy chair was designed by Karen and Ebbe Clemmensen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1959. The chair exemplifies a sculptural and minimalist approach to Danish mid-century modernism, marked by a strong architectural expression and rich tactile qualities.

The frame is crafted from dark-stained ash, displaying a visible linear grain and a slightly matte finish that enhances the crisp silhouette of the structure. The tapered legs extend gracefully into curved arm supports, which are connected with exposed mortise-and-tenon joints and subtle brass hardware. A distinctive feature is the leather sling forming the armrest, secured at the top with a discreet brass button, bridging the space between the front and rear uprights with a soft yet sculptural element.

The seat and backrest are upholstered in the original red leather, presenting a deep oxblood tone with a muted sheen. Over time, the leather has developed a warm, natural patina, especially in areas of frequent contact, while remaining in excellent condition without any structural damage. The seat and back panels are formed as a continuous, molded leather sling held taut by the wooden frame, gently reclined to enhance ergonomic comfort.

The design’s skeletal elegance is defined by clarity and restraint, with each component carefully articulated. The interaction between the taut leather and the softly sculpted ash frame creates a sense of lightness despite the solidity of the materials. The chair’s compact proportions are balanced by a strong visual presence, accentuated by the contrast between the dark frame and the saturated leather upholstery.

Karen and Ebbe Clemmensen were a Danish architect couple who integrated modernist ideals across architecture and furniture design. Their work is characterized by balanced proportions, thoughtful construction, and an expressive use of materials, drawing inspiration from Danish cabinetmaking traditions and international modernism. Pieces by the Clemmensens, especially those produced by Fritz Hansen, are exceptionally rare and hold a significant place in Danish design history.

The chair measures 61 cm in width, 68 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, with a seat height of 35 cm. In imperial units, this translates to approximately 24 inches wide, 26.8 inches deep, 28 inches high, and a seat height of 13.8 inches.
