Karl-Erik Ekselius easy chairs
This is a rare pair of easy chairs, model F60, designed by Karl-Erik Ekselius and produced by JOC (Jonsson och Carlsson) in Vetlanda, Sweden during the 1960s. The design reflects Ekselius’ refined modernist aesthetic, balancing industrial precision with tactile comfort through the integration of chromed steel and tufted leather upholstery.
Each chair features a minimalist cantilevered frame in polished chromed steel, with wide flattened feet forming a stable T-shaped base. The bent steel side members rise uninterrupted from the legs to the backrest, where they act as an exposed support element and structural spine. The seat and back cushions are mounted in a floating arrangement, secured via a series of slats at the rear and underframe, emphasizing the visual separation between the upholstery and the structural framework.
The original leather is finished in a deep red-brown tone, with uniform square tufting across both seat and backrest. The cushions are generously filled and retain their form, although the leather shows age-appropriate wear including creasing, minor abrasions, and areas of repair, most notably on the seat surfaces. This patina lends character and affirms the chairs’ originality.
Karl-Erik Ekselius was a Swedish designer and architect known for his restrained and elegant contributions to mid-century furniture. His work was characterized by clean lines, high-quality materials, and an understanding of industrial production, which he seamlessly combined with comfort-focused design. Ekselius collaborated closely with JOC Vetlanda throughout his career, and many of his designs—such as the F60—were exported internationally and remain highly regarded for their structural clarity and luxurious feel.
JOC Vetlanda was one of Sweden’s leading furniture manufacturers during the post-war period, particularly noted for its partnerships with top-tier designers and its focus on modernist export furniture. Their production combined Swedish woodworking tradition with growing international demand for metal-framed and architecturally inspired furniture.
The pair is in vintage condition, showing visible signs of use and several leather repairs, but remains structurally sound and visually striking. The steel frames are in good condition with minor oxidation consistent with age.
