Karl-Erik Ekselius sofa
This three-seater sofa was designed by Karl-Erik Ekselius and produced by JOC (Johansson Och Carlsson) in Vetlanda, Sweden during the 1960s. The piece exemplifies Ekselius’ refined approach to modern Scandinavian design, combining architectural structure with elegant simplicity and high-quality materials.
The sofa is constructed in walnut with a frame that provides both strength and visual balance. The base is lightly elevated on cylindrical legs, emphasizing horizontal lines and creating a floating appearance. The original black leather upholstery features deep button tufting across the backrest and seat cushions, which provides both structural rhythm and comfort. The armrests are gently flared, framing the composition and giving the sofa its distinctive, sculptural character.
Karl-Erik Ekselius (1914–1998) was among Sweden’s foremost modernist designers, known for his work that bridged the aesthetic traditions of functionalism and fine craftsmanship. As head designer at JOC, Ekselius contributed significantly to postwar Swedish furniture design, creating pieces that were both elegant and adaptable to contemporary interiors. JOC Vetlanda was one of Sweden’s leading manufacturers of high-end furniture during this period, recognized for precise construction and timeless forms.
The sofa remains in good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age. The leather has developed a rich natural patina that enhances its character, and the walnut base retains a warm, even tone with minor surface marks.
