Kay Fisker attrib. easy chair
This rare easy chair is attributed to Danish architect and designer Kay Fisker and was produced in Denmark during the 1930s. The chair exemplifies a transitional moment in Scandinavian furniture design, bridging traditional craftsmanship with early modernist influences.
The frame is crafted from solid walnut, offering a warm and durable foundation. The upholstery is original leather, now richly patinated to a deep brown with natural variations and wear consistent with age. Both the seat and backrest feature deep button tufting arranged in a diamond pattern, a detail reminiscent of classic English club and Chesterfield chairs, yet softened here by rounded contours and a more compact overall profile.
The chair presents a robust form with generous proportions and a gently reclined back for comfort. The rolled armrests are integrated into the frame, ending in subtle scrolls at the front, which contribute to the chair’s sculptural quality. The back curves outward slightly, providing volume and a sense of enclosure without superfluous decoration. The base rests on short, tapered walnut legs that lift the heavy frame just enough to achieve visual balance and lightness.
Kay Fisker (1893–1965) was a key figure in Danish functionalism, both in architecture and furniture design. While this piece is attributed rather than definitively documented as his production, it strongly reflects Fisker’s aesthetic values of simplicity, practicality, refined detailing, and respect for traditional materials.
The chair is in good condition, exhibiting a notable aged patina. The leather shows expected signs of wear, including creasing, discoloration, and softened areas especially on the seat and armrests, all of which underscore its authenticity and long-term use. The internal structure remains stable and intact.
Dimensions measure 90 centimeters wide, 90 centimeters deep, and 90 centimeters high, with a seat height of 38 centimeters (approximately 35.4 by 35.4 by 35.4 inches, seat height 15 inches).
