Kurt Østervig side table
This rare and exceptionally long side table or bench was designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by Jason Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. Østervig, recognized for his versatile furniture designs spanning both domestic and institutional contexts, frequently employed natural materials and clean architectural lines. This piece exemplifies his ability to marry functional form with subtle refinement.
Constructed from solid oak, the bench features a veneered teak top that presents a rich, contrasting grain. The rectangular surface is notably long and narrow, supported by five evenly spaced oak legs shaped as inverted trapezoidal frames. These open-frame supports introduce a rhythmic structural element and visual lightness while ensuring excellent stability. The teak top displays a pronounced linear grain with deep reddish-brown tones and darker figuring, all professionally restored to a smooth matte finish.
The piece bears the “Danish Furnituremakers Control” stamp, denoting its manufacture under Denmark’s mid-century quality certification scheme, which assured high standards of material selection and craftsmanship.
Following a full restoration, the bench is in good vintage condition. Close examination reveals minor signs of previous use, including light wear on the legs and a few shallow surface marks on the top, consistent with age and respectful of the material’s integrity.
The dimensions are 305 cm wide, 40 cm deep, and 42 cm high (approximately 120 x 15.7 x 16.5 inches).
