Michael Thonet stool
This rare stool was designed by Michael Thonet and produced by Thonet in Austria during the 1950s. It is constructed in dark-stained bentwood with a circular cane seat, representing the company’s renowned mastery of steam-bent wood technology. The structure consists of interlocking curved elements forming a geometric framework of continuous loops, giving the piece both strength and visual lightness. The circular seat in natural cane contrasts beautifully with the dark wood, adding warmth and texture to the composition.
The stool’s design demonstrates Thonet’s innovative approach to combining craftsmanship with industrial production. The bentwood rings are precisely shaped and joined without unnecessary ornamentation, emphasizing the elegance of the material and its structural potential. The woven cane top contributes flexibility and breathability, elements that were integral to Thonet’s furniture philosophy.
Michael Thonet (1796–1871) was a pioneer in modern furniture design, widely recognized for his revolutionary bentwood techniques that transformed mass production in the 19th and 20th centuries. His company, Gebrüder Thonet, became synonymous with refined craftsmanship and technical innovation, influencing generations of designers across Europe.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with age. The finish retains its original depth and the cane seat is firm and intact.
