Nanna Ditzel desk
This freestanding writing desk was designed by Nanna Ditzel and produced by Søren Willadsen in Denmark in 1955. Crafted from richly grained rosewood, the desk exemplifies mid-century Danish modern design through its elegant proportions, refined materials, and subtle detailing. Reflecting Ditzel’s design philosophy of functional clarity paired with sculptural restraint, the piece presents a compact yet architectural form.
The rectangular tabletop is veneered in rosewood, showcasing a deep, warm tone and pronounced linear grain pattern. It is supported by four tapered round legs that transition into angular, faceted brackets where they join the frame. The apron incorporates three drawers with integrated recessed pulls, expertly carved directly into the solid rosewood fronts, creating a seamless visual integration without the use of metal hardware.
Fully finished on all sides, the desk is designed to be placed freely within a room. The back and sides feature equally meticulous detailing, emphasizing its freestanding nature. Structural stretchers beneath the surface add stability while maintaining openness and lightness.
The desk has undergone complete restoration and is in good vintage condition. The rosewood has been carefully refinished, preserving the grain’s natural depth while ensuring a consistent matte sheen across all surfaces. The drawers fit precisely and slide smoothly, a testament to the high craftsmanship of the Søren Willadsen workshop, renowned for its quality Danish furniture production throughout the 1950s and 60s.
