Nanna Ditzel & Illum Wikkelsø sofa

Information

This very rare three-seat sofa was designed by Nanna Ditzel and Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The design combines organic modernism with Scandinavian material precision, resulting in a sculptural yet highly functional seating form. It is part of a cohesive seating group, which also includes a matching pair of easy chairs.

The frame is constructed from teak, supporting a fully upholstered body covered in the original brown wool fabric. The sofa is elevated on cylindrical steel legs finished with teak foot terminals, giving the piece a light, floating presence despite its generous size. The armrests and backrest form a continuous upholstered shell with soft, undulating lines that curve outward at the arms and gently rise along the backrest, creating a dynamic and inviting silhouette. The seat features three loose cushions integrated within the frame, maintaining a clean and geometric composition.

The wool upholstery remains in original condition with a soft patina consistent with age and use. The texture is even, showing minor wear along edges and some compression in the seat cushions. The teak base is well preserved with minimal surface wear, while the steel legs exhibit light oxidation typical of vintage pieces.

Nanna Ditzel and Illum Wikkelsø, both prominent figures in Danish design, contributed individually and occasionally collaborated in shaping Danish modernism. This sofa reflects their shared interest in ergonomic comfort and fluid form. Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik, active in the mid-20th century, was known for producing high-quality furniture and played a key role in bringing innovative Danish designs to market.

The sofa exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian furniture ideals, harmonizing organic shapes and material honesty with understated technical refinement.

The dimensions are 205 centimeters wide, 73 centimeters deep, and 74 centimeters high, with a seat height of 39 centimeters (approximately 80.7 by 28.7 by 29.1 inches, seat height 15.4 inches).
