Nils Landberg vase
This very rare and large glass vase, designed by Nils Landberg and produced by Orrefors in Sweden in 1964, is a refined embodiment of Scandinavian modernist glass art. Signed Orrefors 1964 N. Landberg, the piece stands as both a technical and aesthetic achievement within the tradition of Swedish studio glass, and reflects Landberg’s distinctive artistic language—marked by elegant restraint, subtle color gradation, and a deep understanding of form.
The vase is distinguished by its elongated, tapering silhouette that rises in a continuous, fluid motion from a narrow base to a gently flared rim. The proportions are meticulously balanced, emphasizing verticality while maintaining a light and ethereal visual presence. The form itself is highly refined, indicative of Landberg’s expertise in glassblowing and his capacity to control thickness, transparency, and curvature with precision.
Executed in clear crystal glass with a faint pale blue tint, the surface is enriched by fine white filigree—a network of delicate, looping lines embedded within the glass mass. These concentric, lace-like patterns spiral subtly around the vessel’s body, giving the piece both visual depth and tactile nuance. The optical interplay between the filigree and the shifting transparency of the glass creates a sense of internal motion, particularly when viewed in varying light conditions.
The gentle outward flare of the rim provides a soft counterpoint to the otherwise vertical composition, enhancing the vase’s visual poise. This quiet sculptural detail demonstrates Landberg’s commitment to purity of form and his ability to infuse simple gestures with expressive power.
Nils Landberg (1907–1991) was a key designer at Orrefors during the mid-20th century, working alongside figures such as Vicke Lindstrand and Edward Hald. While best known for his Tulpan series and delicate thin-walled vases, Landberg also explored more intricate decorative techniques, such as filigree and graal, always maintaining a minimalist sensibility and precision in execution. His work remains highly collectible and continues to be exhibited internationally as a cornerstone of Swedish modern glass design.
This vase is in excellent vintage condition, with superb optical clarity and intact decorative detailing. Minor signs of age—typical of a mid-century studio piece—only underscore its authenticity. As a signed and dated example from one of Orrefors’ most accomplished designers, it represents a rare and significant addition to any collection of Scandinavian glass or modern decorative arts.
