Ole Wanscher armchairs
This is a rare and complete set of eight armchairs, model PJ412, designed by Danish architect and designer Ole Wanscher and produced by P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s.
The frames are executed in solid rosewood, a material that was widely used in Danish furniture making before restrictions on its use were introduced, valued for its dense grain structure and rich, reddish-brown tone with deep natural variation. The seats and backrests retain their original black leather upholstery, which has developed a subtle patina consistent with careful use and age. The design reflects Wanscher’s characteristically refined and architectural approach to modern furniture. The chairs feature gently curved armrests and a clean, linear structure that exemplifies the influence of classic furniture forms interpreted through a mid-century lens. The joinery is discreet and precise, with sculptural detailing at the junctions between the arms and legs that underscores the craftsmanship of the cabinetmaker.
Ole Wanscher (1903–1985) was one of the leading figures in Danish modernism, known for his scholarly approach to furniture and for designs that merged traditional forms with modernist ideals. After studying under Kaare Klint, he developed a style rooted in proportion, construction, and the use of fine materials. His collaboration with P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik began in the 1940s and produced a number of now-iconic models. The PJ412 is less commonly seen in sets of this size, making this grouping especially notable.
P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik was a respected Danish cabinetmaker known for producing furniture of high quality in close collaboration with leading Danish designers. The manufacturer’s label is present on the underside of each chair, confirming the origin and authenticity of the set.
The chairs are in very good original condition with light signs of wear to the leather and minor surface marks to the wood, consistent with age and use. No structural repairs are evident, and the rosewood has been well-preserved.
Each chair measures 63 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and 85.5 cm high (24.8 x 23.6 x 33.7 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches).
