Information

Rare freestanding desk designed by Ole Wanscher, produced by master cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen in Denmark during the 1940s. Constructed in rosewood with solid brass fittings, this piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and architectural precision of Danish cabinetmaking from the mid-century period.

The desk features a rectangular tabletop with a subtle overhang and elegantly framed edges. Each side is fitted with a bank of three drawers, allowing it to function as a freestanding unit suitable for placement in the center of a room. The drawers have brass handles and escutcheons, finely proportioned to harmonize with the linear structure of the design. The corners and joints are precisely executed, characteristic of Iversen’s workshop and Wanscher’s disciplined design language.

The legs are straight and slender, joined seamlessly to the frame and finished with brass sabots. The rosewood displays a rich, vivid grain with deep brown and golden undertones, enhancing the natural depth of the surface. The rear of the desk is finished, allowing it to be viewed and used from all sides.

Ole Wanscher, one of the leading figures of Danish modernism, is known for his classical approach to proportion and structural clarity. His collaboration with A.J. Iversen resulted in some of the most refined furniture of the era, blending functional design with exceptional material craftsmanship.

This example is presented in excellent vintage condition, showing minor signs of use consistent with age.
