Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
The lamp features a broad, shallow bowl-shaped shade made from original glass in a warm, creamy yellow tone. The glass has a gently flared profile, widening toward the upper edge before curving inward toward its base. Its smooth, glossy surface and softly rounded contours give the lamp an elegant, almost floating appearance. The warm coloration of the glass provides a subtle contrast to the darker, naturally patinated brass fittings.
At the center of the composition is a cylindrical brass element extending downward from the glass shade. A circular brass plate sits between the glass and the cylinder, creating a carefully defined transition between the two materials. The brass components have developed a rich patina over time, with variations in tone and surface texture that emphasize the lamp’s age and authenticity. The contrast between the translucent glass and the solid brass gives the design a distinctive architectural character.
When illuminated, the glass shade diffuses the light into a warm, even glow, revealing the depth and softness of its original coloration. The upward-facing bowl also directs light toward the ceiling, creating a gentle reflection that spreads across the surrounding surface. This combination of diffused and reflected light produces a comfortable, atmospheric illumination particularly suited to architectural interiors.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers and a pioneering figure in modern Scandinavian lighting. As a co-founder of Taito Oy, established in 1918, he played an important role in developing Finnish decorative and architectural lighting throughout the 20th century. His designs are celebrated for their elegant proportions, inventive use of materials, and ability to transform functional lighting into sculptural objects.
The lamp’s provenance from Alava Hospital in Kuopio adds an important historical dimension to the piece. Commissioned lighting was a significant part of Tynell’s practice, and his work for public buildings often combined practical lighting requirements with a strong architectural identity. This example demonstrates that approach through its understated form, carefully balanced materials, and softly diffused illumination.
The lamp retains its original glass shade and brass fittings. The brass displays a naturally developed patina, including minor discoloration and surface marks consistent with age and use. The glass appears well preserved, with small signs of wear appropriate to its vintage condition.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use and age-related patina.
The lamp measures 40 cm (15.7 in) in diameter and 25 cm (9.8 in) in height.
