Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen sofa
This rare Minerva daybed or sofa was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Son in Denmark during the 1950s. It exemplifies the balance between functionality, craftsmanship, and refined modern aesthetics that defined Danish mid-century furniture design. The piece combines an elegantly sculpted teak frame with woven cane panels and its original green wool upholstery, offering both visual warmth and structural precision.
The frame is constructed in solid teak with softly rounded edges and tapered legs, demonstrating Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen’s attention to organic form and joinery. The woven cane side and back panels provide a light, transparent quality that contrasts beautifully with the darker tone of the wood. Brass fittings connect the components with mechanical clarity, allowing the sofa to maintain its modular, demountable character—a hallmark of France & Son production. The cushions are upholstered in a finely textured green fabric with subtle tonal depth, original to the piece and preserved in remarkable condition.
Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were among the most innovative Danish design partnerships of the 20th century. Their furniture, often produced by France & Son, emphasized honest materials, simple geometric forms, and practicality suited to both domestic and export markets. The Minerva series, introduced in the early 1950s, became an icon of Danish modernism for its light construction, versatility, and timeless expression.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with age and careful use. The cane panels are intact, and the teak has developed a rich, even patina that highlights the grain. The piece stands as a classic representation of Scandinavian modern design—functional, restrained, and beautifully crafted.
