Poul Kjærholm PK-24 lounge chair
This lounge and reclining chair, model PK24, was designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1965 and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark. The chair is constructed around a continuous chromed steel frame that supports a suspended, organically shaped seat and backrest. The form follows a flowing S-shaped profile, allowing the chair to function both as a lounge chair and a low reclining chaise, depending on seating position.
The seat and backrest are executed in woven rattan in a warm natural brown tone. The rattan surface is tightly woven and follows the curvature of the frame with precision, creating a flexible yet supportive surface. At the upper back, the chair is fitted with a cylindrical headrest cushion in original brown leather, attached by adjustable leather straps. The leather shows a rich patina with visible grain, tonal variation, and surface wear consistent with age and use. The chromed steel frame has a reflective surface with light marks and minor wear, typical for vintage chromed steel.
Poul Kjærholm was one of the most important figures in Danish modern design, known for his rigorous exploration of materials and structure. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Kjærholm often prioritized steel over wood, treating industrial materials with the same sensitivity traditionally reserved for craftsmanship. The PK24 reflects his interest in classical reclining forms, reinterpreted through modern materials and construction, and is often compared conceptually to historic chaise longues and daybeds.
E. Kold Christensen was the primary manufacturer of Kjærholm’s furniture during the early part of his career and is closely associated with his most important designs. Production was characterized by small-scale manufacturing, high material quality, and careful execution. As a result, original PK24 chairs produced by E. Kold Christensen are considered rare and are regarded as significant examples of mid-century Scandinavian design.
The chair is in good vintage condition, with signs of use and age visible throughout. The rattan remains intact and structurally sound, showing minor wear consistent with long-term use. The leather headrest displays a well-developed patina, including surface marks and darkening. The steel frame is stable, with minor surface wear and light scratches.
The dimensions are approximately 150 cm in width, 65.5 cm in depth, and 87 cm in height, corresponding to about 59.1 inches wide, 25.8 inches deep, and 34.3 inches high. The seat height is approximately 20 cm, or about 7.9 inches.
