Poul Kjærholm PK-54 dining table
This is a rare and significant dining table, model PK-54, designed by Danish architect and designer Poul Kjærholm in 1963 and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark. The table represents one of the most iconic expressions of Scandinavian modernism, embodying Kjærholm’s lifelong exploration of the relationship between natural materials and industrial precision.
The PK-54 features a circular tabletop made of flint-rolled Cipollini marble, known for its soft white tone and irregular grey veining. The stone surface has a textured matte finish that enhances the natural mineral patterns and tactile quality of the marble. The edge of the tabletop is subtly chamfered, maintaining the table’s architectural simplicity while reducing visual weight. The marble top rests on a frame constructed from satin-chromed steel, which forms an open rectangular base that is both minimal and structurally efficient. The exposed construction of the steel frame emphasizes Kjærholm’s belief in the honesty of materials and joinery.
A key feature of this design is the six-piece addition ring made of solid maple, which can be assembled around the marble core to expand the table’s diameter from 140 cm to 210 cm. This addition introduces a contrasting warmth and versatility to the design, reflecting Kjærholm’s conceptual vision of furniture as adaptable to different functional and spatial needs. The ring is stored in a custom wooden stand when not in use, itself a sculptural element that complements the overall aesthetic of the table.
Poul Kjærholm, a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, is considered one of Denmark’s most intellectual and restrained modernists. His works, particularly those produced by E. Kold Christensen, are renowned for their structural clarity, use of industrial materials like steel and stone, and philosophical rigor.
The table is in good vintage condition, exhibiting signs of age-appropriate wear and a well-developed patina. The marble top shows minor nicks and light surface marks consistent with use, while the steel frame retains its clean chromed finish. The maple addition ring has aged gracefully, showing tonal variation that highlights the grain and history of use.
The dimensions of the table are 140 cm in diameter when closed and 210 cm when expanded, with a height of 65.5 cm (approximately 55.1 inches in diameter when closed, 82.7 inches expanded, and 25.8 inches high).
