Poul Nørreklit desk
This freestanding desk was designed by Poul Nørreklit and produced by Sigurd Hansens Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. It combines an expressive rosewood top with striking plexiglass side supports, a pairing that illustrates the designer’s interest in material contrasts and sculptural transparency. The desk is further detailed with steel fittings and small circular drawer pulls, emphasizing a functional yet refined aesthetic.
The rectangular top is crafted in richly grained rosewood, with natural variations in tone and pattern that bring warmth and depth to the otherwise minimal composition. Beneath the surface, three front-mounted drawers provide practical storage, each designed with integrated keyholes and cylindrical steel knobs. The drawers are inset to emphasize the horizontal expanse of the top while maintaining a light visual balance.
The base is constructed from clear plexiglass sheets, joined with steel fittings, allowing the substantial rosewood top to appear as though it is floating. This innovative use of acrylic was relatively experimental for the time, aligning with the broader mid-century exploration of modern materials. The contrast between the dense, organic rosewood and the weightless transparency of the plexiglass creates a distinctive presence that is both architectural and elegant.
The desk is preserved in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of usage consistent with age. It reflects the Scandinavian modernist ethos of combining craftsmanship, functional clarity, and progressive material use, while also carrying Nørreklit’s signature play between mass and lightness.
