Poul Volther easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model Goliat, was designed by Danish designer Poul Volther and produced by Gemla Möbel AB in Diö, Sweden during the 1960s. The chairs embody the principles of Scandinavian modernism through their light visual language, honest use of materials, and clear structural logic. Constructed from white-lacquered solid beech wood, the frames display a refined yet assertive geometry with sharply inclined legs, slatted backrests, and integrated armrests that create an open, sculptural profile.
The Goliat chairs are notable for their high backs supported by evenly spaced spindles that subtly conform to the body’s shape, enhancing both comfort and aesthetic rhythm. The original cushions are upholstered in a deep green wool fabric characteristic of the period, exhibiting gentle wear and a slight patina from age while remaining structurally sound. These cushions are suspended by leather straps, fixed through visible loops that contribute to both the ergonomic function and visual detail of the design.
Poul Volther, renowned for his work with the FDB Møbler cooperative and his iconic Corona chair, championed democratic design ideals in postwar Scandinavia. His work balanced comfort and rational design, combining craftsmanship with serial production techniques. Although Danish, Volther’s collaboration with Gemla—the oldest furniture manufacturer in Sweden—reflects the cross-Nordic partnerships of the era. Gemla is known for its production of bentwood and solid wood seating dating back to the 19th century.
Stylistically, these chairs merge functionalist foundations with expressive modernist experimentation. They are constructed with integrity and architectural presence while retaining a sense of lightness and domestic warmth. Each chair measures 64 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 103 cm in height, with a seat height of 37 cm. In imperial measurements, this translates to approximately 25.2 inches wide, 33.5 inches deep, 40.6 inches high, and a seat height of 14.6 inches.
The chairs are in excellent overall condition, showing minimal wear on the lacquered finish and well-preserved upholstery. They remain rare examples on the market, offering a distinctive and representative expression of Volther’s Scandinavian design legacy.
