Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm Scimitar seating group
This exceptionally rare seating group, model Scimitar, was designed by the Danish duo Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm and produced by Ivan Schlechter in Denmark in 1966. The ensemble is a defining example of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, embodying the designers’ commitment to minimalism, ergonomic comfort, and material sophistication.
The set comprises three easy chairs and a circular coffee table, unified by a sculptural and futuristic aesthetic. The chairs feature steel frames in a cantilevered “scimitar” configuration, named after their sweeping, crescent-shaped base. Each seat is upholstered in the original thick dark brown leather, which contours organically to the body, balancing comfort with a strong architectural presence. The backrests are gently curved and tapered, producing a light, fluid visual profile. The leather’s craftsmanship and patina reflect both the high quality of production and careful use over time.
The accompanying table has a round top made from original thick clear glass, supported by a stainless steel frame that mirrors the structural rhythm of the chairs. The legs connect via cross braces that intersect beneath the glass surface, providing stability and adding a geometric accent visible through the transparent top.
The condition is very good overall. The leather exhibits minor wear consistent with its age, while the metal retains its original satin finish. The glass top is free from chips or cracks, showing only light surface scratches.
Preben Fabricius (1931–1984) and Jørgen Kastholm (1931–2007) formed one of the most influential post-war Danish design partnerships. Both trained as architects and cabinetmakers, they focused on creating timeless, functional furniture using modern materials like steel and leather. Their collaborations, many produced by Ivan Schlechter and Kill International, are renowned for structural clarity and sculptural refinement.
Ivan Schlechter was a Danish manufacturer noted for producing limited editions of avant-garde modernist furniture. His studio provided Fabricius and Kastholm with a platform to explore formal innovation and material experimentation.
Stylistically, the Scimitar group belongs firmly within the mid-century Scandinavian modern tradition, while its forward-looking forms anticipate elements of 1970s futurism and international design trends.
The table measures 120 cm in diameter and 42.5 cm in height (approximately 47.24 x 16.73 inches). Each chair measures 82 cm wide, 65 cm deep, and 65 cm high, with a seat height of 35 cm (approximately 32.28 x 25.59 x 25.59 inches, seat height 13.78 inches).
