Preben Thorsen easy chair
A very rare easy chair designed by Preben Thorsen and produced by Morten & Olsen & Søn in Denmark in 1957. The design is a refined example of early Danish modernism, combining sculptural clarity with an inventive and highly functional construction. The chair is composed of two interlocking elements, where the seat and backrest are joined through a precise and visible joinery system that allows the structure to lock together without unnecessary hardware, emphasizing both craftsmanship and architectural logic.
The frame is executed in solid teak with a warm, reddish-brown tone and a finely grained surface. The legs are angled in a characteristic splayed formation, creating a stable yet visually light stance. Subtle detailing can be seen in the joinery, including exposed finger joints and carefully shaped intersections that highlight the cabinetmaker’s precision. The organic curvature of the backrest and seat frame softens the geometric construction and enhances the chair’s ergonomic qualities.
The seat and back are handwoven in cane, executed with a tight and consistent weave that provides both resilience and comfort. The cane has developed a rich honey-colored patina, complementing the teak frame and adding depth to the overall appearance. The weaving wraps elegantly around the frame, with reinforced edges and rhythmic patterning that underline the craftsmanship involved. The slightly reclined back and low seat height contribute to a relaxed seating position, typical of lounge furniture from this period.
This model stands out for its modular concept, where the interlocking construction not only serves a structural purpose but also defines the visual identity of the chair. It reflects a period of experimentation in Danish design during the 1950s, where designers explored new ways of combining traditional materials with modernist principles.
Dimensions: width 61 cm (24.0 in), depth 74 cm (29.1 in), height 76.5 cm (30.1 in), seat height 33 cm (13.0 in).
The chair remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with age. The teak frame shows light wear and patina, while the cane is well preserved with only slight variations in tone, maintaining both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
