Ralf Lindberg dining chairs
This rare set of twelve Tati dining chairs was designed by Ralf Lindberg and produced by Gärsnäs Möbler in Sweden in 1988. The design reflects a clear Scandinavian sensibility, marked by its geometric clarity, attention to detail, and emphasis on durable craftsmanship. The chairs are executed in black lacquered beechwood with removable and reversible seat cushions, making them both formally cohesive and functionally adaptable.
Each chair features a distinctively curved backrest formed from a single, wide wooden element, slightly bent for ergonomic support. The backrest is supported by two rear legs set at an angle, which visually extend upward beyond the seat line to brace the backrest from behind. This detail lends the chairs a strong sculptural identity while maintaining stability and compact proportions. The front legs are straight and terminate in square-section feet that reinforce the architectural precision of the overall form.
The seat is equipped with a reversible leather cushion, upholstered in black leather on one side and tan on the other, allowing for versatile visual presentation and practical use. The cushion sits neatly atop a molded seat base with a slightly concave profile, offering a modest degree of contour for seated comfort. The wood surfaces retain a consistent black lacquer finish with a subtle sheen, showing only minimal handling marks consistent with excellent preservation.
The dimensions of each chair are 49 cm in width, 47 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height. The seat height measures 46 cm. These measurements correspond approximately to 19.3 x 18.5 x 31.5 inches, with a seat height of 18.1 inches. The proportions are compact enough for close arrangement at a dining table while still providing adequate support and presence.
Designed in the late 1980s, the Tati model was part of a broader wave of postmodern Scandinavian furniture that continued to honor clean lines and material honesty while introducing more assertive forms. Ralf Lindberg’s design for Gärsnäs Möbler stands out for its visual weight, adaptability, and refined use of materials. Gärsnäs, one of Sweden’s premier furniture manufacturers since the 19th century, has maintained a reputation for producing architect-designed furniture with a focus on quality and timelessness.
The set is in excellent condition, with structurally sound frames, intact lacquer finish, and well-preserved leather upholstery.
