Information

This is a rare set of six dining chairs designed by Finnish architect Reino Ruokolainen and produced by Haimi in Finland during the 1960s. The design is a representative example of Finnish mid-century modernism, combining robust craftsmanship with restrained formal language and a strong emphasis on natural materials.

Each chair features a frame constructed from solid teak with a medium to dark brown tone and visible linear grain. The wood surfaces exhibit a slightly matte finish with minor patina, consistent with careful use over time. The construction is rectilinear and minimal, consisting of square-profile legs joined by horizontal stretchers. The chair backs are formed by a single curved crosspiece that offers subtle lumbar support while maintaining a clean visual outline. The seat and backrest inserts are composed of woven natural cane, arranged in a tight geometric basketweave pattern. The cane is hand-applied and secured with precision, showcasing subtle tonal variations ranging from light beige to honey brown. The combination of teak and cane produces a warm material contrast and reflects the Scandinavian interest in tactile and breathable seating surfaces during the postwar period. The design is armless, enhancing its compact profile and stackable appearance.

These chairs remain in good vintage condition. The teak frames are stable and retain their original finish, while the cane shows minor wear and tonal aging in areas of contact, consistent with age. There are no major losses or structural damages.

Reino Ruokolainen was active during the postwar design boom in Finland and contributed to the development of modernist interiors through his collaborations with Haimi and other local producers. Haimi was known for producing high-quality Scandinavian furniture with an emphasis on both durability and clarity of form, often integrating local materials and production techniques.

Each chair measures 43 cm in width, 46 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm. In imperial units, the dimensions are approximately 16.9 inches wide, 18.1 inches deep, 27.6 inches high, and a seat height of 16.5 inches.
