Rud Thygesen daybed

This rare bed or daybed with integrated storage was designed by Rud Thygesen and produced by Contour in Denmark during the 1960s. Crafted entirely from solid pine, the piece exemplifies Danish modern principles of functional living, emphasizing efficient use of space and material clarity.

The design features a rectangular frame with three front-facing drawers seamlessly integrated into the base. Each drawer is equipped with a distinctive circular recessed pull, contributing to a rhythmic facade while maintaining a minimal profile. The pine displays a warm reddish-brown tone with expressive grain patterns and natural variations characteristic of the wood species, enhanced by a refined finish. The top is fitted with a rectangular cushion upholstered in light grey wool or a wool blend, featuring cutouts at both front corners to facilitate easy seating or reclining.

Structurally, the bed is low and grounded with no visible legs, giving it a compact, architectural presence. The box-like base is constructed with mitered corners and recessed drawer fronts, creating a cohesive and precise visual language. The drawers are deep and extend nearly the full width of each section, offering ample storage for linens, clothing, or other household items.

Rud Thygesen, born in 1932, was a significant figure in Danish design throughout the mid-20th century, known for both his modernist furniture and experimental forms. While he frequently collaborated with Johnny Sørensen, this piece is solely attributed to Thygesen. Contour was a Danish furniture manufacturer active during the postwar period, contributing to the international stature of Scandinavian design through clean-lined, practical furnishings.

The bed is in very good condition, showing minor wear to the wood surfaces and upholstery consistent with careful use and age. The pine maintains a rich, even color, and the drawers function smoothly.
