Sideboard / console table
This rare and unusual mid-century sideboard or console table dates from the 1950s and is of unknown designer. Constructed from elm with a warm honey-toned finish, the cabinet rests on a tall, linear base crafted from the same wood, featuring subtle detailing and a refined edge profile. The piece blends traditional craftsmanship with mid-century styling, notable for its ornamentation and use of mixed materials.
The upper section comprises four equally sized drawers arranged in two rows. Each drawer front is decorated with an inlaid motif of stylized foliate scrollwork, likely made from darker wood inlay, which adds visual richness without overpowering the otherwise restrained form. The drawer pulls are patinated brass and metal, consisting of simple round escutcheons with cylindrical handles, maintaining a functionalist approach to hardware amid the decorative elements.
Supporting the base are square legs connected by a slender brass stretcher system featuring a central spherical joint. This minimal structural detail provides both reinforcement and a sculptural quality, reminiscent of architectural ironwork and imparting a subtle Neoclassical influence. The tabletop is topped with a cream-colored Formica surface, offering a practical, durable working or display area that contrasts with the organic warmth of the wood, reflecting postwar modern domestic trends.
A partially legible label on the underside references Kaiserswerth, Düsseldorf, suggesting possible German manufacture or distribution, though the exact designer or producer remains unidentified.
The sideboard is in very good vintage condition, showing light signs of use consistent with its age. The wood surfaces have minor wear and patina, while the brass elements exhibit mellow oxidation typical of mid-century hardware.
