Sigurd Persson candlesticks
This set of six candlesticks, model Romb, was designed by Sigurd Persson and produced by Sigurd Persson Design in Sweden during the 1950s. Each candlestick is made of solid brass, a material that Persson frequently employed for its warm tone and ability to develop a rich natural patina over time. The pieces are stamped with “SIG.P” and retain original Utmärkt Svensk Form labels, signifying excellence in Swedish design.
The form consists of a sharply angled rhombus-shaped top plate resting on a cylindrical base. The geometric balance between the flat, planar surface and the vertical cylinder exemplifies Persson’s precise understanding of proportion and his architectural approach to metalwork. The brass surface has aged to a matte, golden hue with traces of oxidation and small marks consistent with age and use, contributing to the visual depth of the material.
Sigurd Persson (1914–2003) was one of Sweden’s most influential modernist designers and a trained silversmith. His work bridged the boundaries between craft and industrial design, often combining sculptural purity with technical mastery. Persson’s designs are characterized by a restrained yet bold formal language, which placed him at the forefront of Scandinavian postwar modernism. His contributions were recognized internationally, and he played a central role in defining Swedish metal art in the mid-20th century.
The Romb candlesticks reflect mid-century Scandinavian design ideals—simplicity, functionality, and clarity of form—while demonstrating Persson’s sculptural sensibility and innovative use of geometry. They can be arranged individually or grouped to form striking compositions of repeating diamond shapes.
