Sigurd Resell seating group

This rare seating group, designed by Sigurd Resell for Vatne Møbler in Norway during the 1970s, consists of two high-back easy chairs, two matching ottomans, and a circular coffee table, all from the iconic Falcon series. The set is a refined expression of Scandinavian modernism, known for its material composition and formal clarity.

The frames of the chairs and stools are constructed from chromed steel, featuring a four-star base configuration that offers both visual lightness and structural stability. The chairs and ottomans are suspended by tensioned brown canvas slings, into which loose cushions are mounted. These cushions are upholstered in cognac-brown leather, which is button-tufted and displays rich natural patina, creasing, and some signs of wear, indicative of its age and use. Despite this, the leather remains supple and intact, showing good vintage condition. The warm leather tones contrast subtly with the darker canvas backs and the cool, glossy steel frames, creating a visually dynamic effect. The coffee table features a smoked grey glass top with a polished edge, resting on a similarly constructed chromed steel base, which echoes the design language of the chairs.

Sigurd Resell (1920–2010), a Norwegian designer, is best known for his work with Vatne Møbler, particularly the Falcon chair, which debuted in 1971. Resell trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry. The Falcon series was a breakthrough for Vatne Møbler, combining functionalist influences with an innovative approach to form and suspension, making it one of the most recognizable and enduring Norwegian furniture designs of the 20th century.

The design of the Falcon series captures a transitional period in modernism, moving from rigidity toward the more relaxed aesthetics of the 1970s. The hanging seat structure and sculptural frame are a testament to Resell’s exploration of tension and ergonomics, providing both comfort and visual intrigue.

The table has a diameter of 90 cm and a height of 48 cm (35.4 x 18.9 inches). Each chair measures 77 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 101 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm (30.3 x 31.5 x 39.8 inches, seat height 16.9 inches). The ottomans each measure 59 cm by 59 cm with a height of 40 cm (23.2 x 23.2 x 15.7 inches).
