Sigvard Nilsson bar stools
This set of four bar stools was designed by Sigvard Nilsson and produced by AB Söwe in Sweden during the 1960s. Each stool is constructed from solid poplar wood, a material chosen for its durability, warm tone, and visible natural grain. The stools retain their original character, with signs of patina and usage consistent with age, which enhance their authenticity as vintage Scandinavian pieces.
The design is defined by a rustic yet refined expression. The seats are circular with a gently rounded edge, while the legs are crafted from solid sections of poplar, showcasing irregular contours and knots that emphasize the organic quality of the material. The legs are connected with round stretchers that add stability and strength to the construction. Each stool is slightly unique, owing to the natural variation of the wood, which highlights the handcrafted nature of production at Söwe in Sövde, Sweden.
Sigvard Nilsson is recognized for his work with Söwe, a producer known for combining artisanal woodworking with the Scandinavian modern ethos of simplicity, honesty in materials, and functionality. These stools exemplify mid-century Scandinavian rustic modernism, where traditional craftsmanship and natural materials were emphasized in parallel with the modern movement.
The stools are preserved in good vintage condition with minor traces of use, adding to their historical integrity. They illustrate the mid-century Scandinavian approach to furniture, blending minimal construction with a raw and natural aesthetic that connects the object to both craft traditions and modernist ideals.
