Sonja Katzin floor lamp
This rare floor lamp was designed by Sonja Katzin in the 1950s and produced by ASEA in Sweden. Executed in solid brass, the lamp features a sculptural cast base with incised radiating lines that converge toward the dual stems, creating a visually dynamic and textural foundation. From this base rise two slender brass columns, each terminating in an adjustable gooseneck that supports a conical lampshade. The shades, newly made to original proportions, are covered in a light fabric that diffuses illumination softly and evenly.
Sonja Katzin was one of the few female designers active in the Swedish modernist lighting field, and her collaboration with ASEA resulted in a number of highly refined designs that combined sculptural elegance with technical functionality. ASEA, best known as a major Swedish electrical company, also maintained a respected design division for lighting, producing works by leading designers such as Gunnar Asplund, Hans Bergström, and Katzin herself. Their lighting was distinguished by high-quality materials, advanced fabrication, and a balance between industrial production and artistic detail.
This piece embodies the Scandinavian approach to mid-century design, where form and function are synthesized in a refined and timeless manner. The brass retains its warm tone and shows a well-preserved surface with light patina consistent with age. The gooseneck arms remain fully functional, allowing directional flexibility in lighting. The overall condition is excellent, with newly fitted shades ensuring both historical fidelity and contemporary usability.
