Sten Blomberg sofa
This rare curved sofa was designed by Sten Blomberg and produced by Knut Lindquist in Stockholm, Sweden, around 1945. The frame is made of mahogany, a material chosen for its strength and warm tone, and it has been recently reupholstered in the classic ‘Cluny’ fabric by Sanderson. The textile, originally designed in 1953, is a richly patterned cotton velvet featuring birds and floral motifs in earthy and vibrant hues, giving the sofa a distinctive and decorative character.
The design reflects Blomberg’s sensitivity to proportion and craftsmanship, combining elegant curvature with traditional upholstery techniques. The softly rounded back and gently rolled armrests create a harmonious silhouette that invites comfort while maintaining a sculptural presence. Resting on slightly tapered mahogany legs, the sofa demonstrates a balance between organic form and structural precision, characteristic of Swedish furniture from the transitional period between early modernism and mid-century design.
Sten Blomberg (1900–1970) was an architect and designer known for his refined furniture and interior works, where function and artistic quality were seamlessly integrated. His collaboration with Knut Lindquist, a renowned Stockholm cabinetmaker, ensured exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail — each piece carefully constructed using the highest standards of Swedish artisanal tradition.
The sofa remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minimal signs of age and a beautiful patina to the wood. The newly applied Sanderson upholstery adds a vivid yet historically sympathetic finish that complements the form.
Dimensions are 165 cm wide, 90 cm deep, and 81 cm high (65 x 35.4 x 31.9 in), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 in)
