Information

This exceptionally rare table lamp was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsbergs Studio in Sweden in 1970. Created during the final years of Lindberg’s ceramic production at Gustavsberg, the lamp is a remarkable example of his sculptural approach to stoneware and his ability to merge artistic expression with functional design. Pieces of this type were produced in very limited numbers within the studio workshop and are among the most sought-after examples of Swedish studio ceramics from the period.

The lamp is distinguished by its striking hexagonal form, rising from a subtly concave base into a tapering architectural body. Each facet is decorated with a meticulously hand-worked geometric texture composed of repeating recessed rectangular impressions, creating a rhythmic surface that captures and reflects light across the dark glaze. The rich brown-black glaze pools within the relief pattern while revealing warm reddish clay tones along the edges and high points, emphasizing both the handmade character and the sculptural depth of the design. Above the faceted body, a softly rounded neck provides an elegant transition to the shade, creating a balanced silhouette that combines monumentality with refinement.

Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) remains one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Scandinavian design. While internationally celebrated for his tableware, ceramics, and industrial design, his studio works produced at Gustavsbergs Studio represent the most experimental and artistic aspect of his career. During the 1960s and 1970s he explored increasingly architectural forms, textured surfaces, and expressive glazing techniques, creating highly individual pieces that blurred the boundary between decorative art and sculpture. This lamp reflects that mature artistic language, combining strong geometric structure with the tactile qualities of hand-crafted stoneware.

Adding further significance is its documented provenance. The lamp originally belonged to a manager at Gustavsbergs Studio and has remained within the family by descent. Such provenance strengthens the historical connection to the studio environment in which the piece was created and underscores its rarity and authenticity.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. The stoneware body displays light wear and small areas of rubbing to the glaze, primarily along edges and corners, consistent with careful use over time. The lamp is fully signed underneath and retains its original artistic character. The pleated shade complements the piece well and provides a warm, atmospheric light that enhances the depth and texture of the ceramic surface.
