Sune Bäckström ashtray
This is a large decorative ashtray designed by Sune Bäckström, produced in Sweden during the 1930s. Executed in pewter, the piece reflects Art Deco design influences through both its sculptural form and detailed ornamentation. The ashtray is circular in shape with a wide, flat basin supported on four short, rounded feet. The vertical wall is embellished with applied reliefs of ribbon-tied laurel garlands in alternating segments, introducing a neoclassical motif typical of the period’s stylized historical references.
The central finial features a highly detailed three-dimensional figure of a nude male archer poised in a dynamic pose, drawing a bow. The figure is mounted on a raised circular pedestal emerging from the center of the basin, serving both as a handle and as a focal point. Four angular cigarette rests are affixed to the rim, evenly spaced and shaped like stylized leaves, which extend outward slightly from the edge.
The underside is stamped with the word “TENN” (Swedish for pewter) and marked with the letter “B” as part of the production identifier. The material surface retains a matte silver-grey tone with patina and signs of age, including light scratches, tarnishing, and minor discoloration consistent with prolonged use and handling.
The dimensions of the piece are 27 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height (10.63 inches wide by 3.94 inches high). It is in good vintage condition with visible wear typical of functional pewter objects from the early 20th century.
Sune Bäckström was an active Swedish designer during the interwar and postwar periods, known for his work in metalwares and decorative arts. His designs often combined historical and classical references with the streamlined geometry of Scandinavian Art Deco. The use of pewter—a soft, silvery metal widely employed in Nordic design—was common during this period for both domestic and ceremonial objects.
