Svend Aage Holm Sørensen candlestick

This rare candlestick was designed by Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by Holm Sørensen & Co. in Denmark during the 1960s. It exemplifies Danish mid-century decorative arts with its sculptural clarity and striking material contrast.

Constructed from black lacquered metal, the candlestick features brass candle holders and a brass-wrapped central column. The design presents a symmetrical arrangement of seven curved arms radiating from a central vertical stem, reminiscent of a menorah. Each arm supports a flared brass cup, subtly irregular due to hand-finishing, which adds a tactile, artisanal quality to the otherwise geometric form. The base consists of four splayed legs made from bent metal rod, providing stability while maintaining a sense of lightness and balance.

The juxtaposition of matte black lacquered steel with polished brass reflects Holm Sørensen’s focus on visual rhythm and contrast. The brass wrapping around the central stem serves both as reinforcement and a warm visual anchor within the austere metalwork.

Svend Aage Holm Sørensen (1913–2004) was a prolific Danish designer known for his expressive use of raw materials and sculptural forms. While primarily recognized for lighting, his decorative and functional objects reveal a broader engagement with form and material, pushing traditional craftsmanship boundaries with a bold industrial aesthetic infused with artistry.

Holm Sørensen & Co. specialized in high-quality metalwork and closely collaborated with the designer throughout the mid-20th century, producing works that balance utility and artistic design, often in limited runs or bespoke commissions.

The candlestick measures 37 cm wide, 10 cm deep, and 29.5 cm high (approximately 14.6 x 3.9 x 11.6 inches). It is in very good vintage condition with light patina on the brass and minor age-related signs on the lacquered frame. The piece remains structurally sound and visually compelling.
