Svend Aage Madsen desk
This rare desk was designed by Svend Aage Madsen in 1957 and produced by K. Knudsen & Søn in Denmark. The piece demonstrates the refined craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of Danish mid-century modern design. Madsen’s work is often recognized for its elegant lines, functional approach, and sculptural presence, and this desk is an excellent example of these qualities.
The desk is constructed in teak and oak, a combination that highlights both durability and visual warmth. The teak gives the desk its rich reddish-brown tone and fine grain, while the oak adds structural strength and a slightly lighter contrast. The rectangular tabletop features a clean surface and carefully finished edges, supported by angled legs and a geometric underframe that balances function with a distinct architectural character.
Designed in the late 1950s, this model reflects the Scandinavian design ethos of the period, prioritizing simplicity, utility, and natural materials. The extendable construction further emphasizes functionality, making it adaptable to different uses. The design remains understated while carrying a strong mid-century identity, with subtle details that underscore the high level of cabinetmaking.
The desk is in good vintage condition, showing small signs of usage and a well-preserved patina that adds to its authenticity and historical value. The surfaces display natural wear consistent with age, without diminishing its structural integrity or aesthetic presence.
