Svend Aage Madsen nesting tables
This rare set of nesting tables was designed by Svend Aage Madsen and produced by Sigurd Hansen Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The tables are crafted in teak and oak, with inlays of stars and circles across the tabletops, creating a decorative pattern that distinguishes them from more standard nesting table designs of the period. The star and circle motifs are inlaid in contrasting wood tones, giving the surface a playful yet refined character.
The tables are rectangular with softly rounded corners and edges, resting on slender, tapered legs that emphasize the lightness and elegance of Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture. The use of teak for the tabletops provides a warm brown surface with fine grain, while the oak legs bring a slightly lighter contrast in tone and texture. The decorative inlay recalls the period’s experimentation with ornamentation in otherwise minimal forms, making these tables an unusual and striking example of Danish craftsmanship.
The condition is good vintage, with only minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. The inlay details remain intact and well-preserved, and the wood shows a warm, even patina. The tables are designed to slide neatly under one another, allowing for flexibility and space-saving functionality, a hallmark of Scandinavian design values.
