Tapio Wirkkala table lamp
This rare KD-11 table or wall lamp was designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Idman in Finland in 1954. A quintessential piece of Finnish modernism, it exemplifies Wirkkala’s mastery in uniting sculptural precision with material sensitivity.
The lamp features a conical white-lacquered metal shade, delicately perforated along the upper rim to allow subtle diffusion of light. Its brass structure, enriched by a wrapped leather detail, expresses both elegance and function. The adjustable arm and tripod-like base — ending in small brass spheres — give the lamp a poised, almost anthropomorphic stance.
This model is one of Wirkkala’s most refined lighting designs, demonstrating his deep understanding of form and proportion. The KD-11 embodies the sculptural essence of 1950s Scandinavian design: minimal, tactile, and harmonious. It can be used either as a table lamp or mounted on the wall, a flexible feature typical of Wirkkala’s functional artistry.
The piece remains in good vintage condition, showing gentle wear and a beautiful patina consistent with age and use.
