Timo Sarpaneva bowls
This rare and complete set of glass bowls was designed by the renowned Finnish designer Timo Sarpaneva and produced by Iittala in Finland during the 1950s. Sarpaneva, one of the most influential figures in Scandinavian design, was known for his innovative approach to glassmaking, merging functional utility with sculptural form. His work for Iittala played a pivotal role in establishing Finland as a leader in modern glass design during the mid-century period.
The set consists of two large bowls and eleven smaller ones, each crafted from richly colored glass in a deep, translucent cranberry hue. The bowls feature clean, cylindrical silhouettes with gently rounded bases and thin, precise rims that emphasize their refined, modernist character. The minimal, balanced form reflects Sarpaneva’s focus on purity of shape and material, while the rich tone of the glass captures and reflects light beautifully, enhancing the sense of depth and volume.
Produced by Iittala, one of Scandinavia’s most important glass manufacturers, the bowls exemplify the company’s commitment to craftsmanship and timeless design. During the 1950s, Iittala collaborated with leading designers like Sarpaneva, Tapio Wirkkala, and Kaj Franck to create pieces that were both practical for daily use and celebrated as works of art.
The set remains in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of wear, consistent with age. These bowls are representative of the mid-century Scandinavian approach to glassmaking, where function, form, and artistry merge seamlessly.
