Information

This glass bottle, known as the “Pullo” or “Bird Bottle” was designed by Timo Sarpaneva in 1956 and produced by Iittala in Finland. It is mouth-blown in transparent smoky olive green glass, exhibiting a subtle gradient effect with darker tones near the top and base, a result of the natural variations in thickness from the hand-blowing process. The form is an elongated teardrop that tapers smoothly into a cylindrical neck, finished with a small outward-pulled lip functioning as a spout. The base features an indented pontil mark and bears the designer’s signature alongside the production year, indicative of authentic craftsmanship. Slight irregularities on the surface testify to the hand-finishing process typical of studio glass pieces.

The Pullo model was part of Sarpaneva’s broader investigation into the sculptural qualities of everyday glass vessels during the 1950s. While designed with practical utility in mind, many pieces in this series carry a strong artistic expression, blending function with sculptural form. Sarpaneva’s tenure at Iittala was instrumental in advancing postwar Scandinavian glass design, characterized by organic shapes, restrained color schemes, and a sophisticated integration of artisanal techniques with industrial production methods. Iittala, established in 1881, emerged as a leading manufacturer of modernist glassware, contributing significantly to Finland’s design legacy on the international stage.

Stylistically, this bottle exemplifies mid-century modern design with its minimalist color palette, smooth organic contours, and emphasis on formal purity. It embodies the Scandinavian design principles of the period, prioritizing functional integrity, material honesty, and visual clarity.

The bottle measures 19.5 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter (approximately 7.7 by 3.5 inches). It is in very good condition, showing only light, age-appropriate wear without any chips, cracks, or repairs.
