Information

Rare set of three glass vases, also referred to as bird bottles or glass sculptures, designed by Timo Sarpaneva and produced by Iittala in Finland in 1956. Each piece is signed T. Sarpaneva 2509, indicating individual hand production in the renowned Iittala glassworks.

The set comprises three organically shaped vessels in clear, cobalt blue, and deep amethyst glass. The forms are slightly asymmetrical with softly swelling midsections and narrow, spouted necks, a motif that characterizes Sarpaneva’s exploration of fluidity and natural motion within blown glass. When stacked, the pieces create a totemic sculptural composition, demonstrating the designer’s fascination with modular design and the interplay between color and transparency.

Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) was one of Finland’s leading modernist designers, known for his innovative approach to industrial and art glass. His collaborations with Iittala helped establish Finnish glass design as a major international force during the mid-20th century. The “bird bottle” series, introduced in the 1950s, exemplifies his fusion of artistry, craftsmanship, and experimentation with form.

This set is in good vintage condition with minor surface marks consistent with age and use. Dimensions: diameter 11 cm (4.3 inches), height 37 cm (14.6 inches).
