Information

This Bastiano easy chair, designed by Tobia Scarpa and produced under license by Haimi in Finland during the mid-20th century, is a prime example of modern modular seating that harmonizes rich materials with architectural clarity. Originally created in 1962, the Bastiano series is celebrated for its elegant simplicity and adaptability, and this Finnish production faithfully preserves the original design’s integrity while showcasing Scandinavian craftsmanship.

The chair’s frame is crafted from solid rosewood, displaying a deep reddish-brown hue and prominent linear grain. The wood is expertly joined and finished with a clear protective coating that accentuates its natural texture and complexity. Scarpa’s architectural language is evident in the box-like frame structure, featuring robust side panels and a horizontal platform supporting the cushions. Subtle brass hardware inset into the side panels adds both structural reinforcement and refined visual detail.

The cushions are upholstered in original black leather, which remains supple and exhibits a rich, natural patina developed over time. The seat, backrest, and arm cushions are generously filled and loosely fitted within the frame, emphasizing comfort and ease. The leather upholstery shows minor creasing and gentle wear, consistent with its vintage character, contributing to the chair’s inviting presence. The combination of thick leather and warm rosewood provides both physical and visual weight, while the open frame design maintains an airy, light aesthetic.

Dimensions of the chair are 91 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 66 cm high, with a seat height of 35 cm (approximately 35.8 x 31.5 x 26 inches, seat height 13.8 inches). Its low, wide proportions reflect Scarpa’s modernist approach to lounge seating, focusing on modularity, relaxation, and structural openness.

Tobia Scarpa is a renowned Italian architect and designer, acclaimed for his collaborations with major manufacturers like Gavina, Cassina, and Knoll. The Bastiano series, initially created for Gavina and later distributed by Knoll internationally, remains an iconic statement of mid-century modern furniture design.
