Information

This rare bar cabinet was designed in 1955 by Norwegian designer Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Mellemstrands Møbelfabrikk in Vigrestad, Norway. It exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century cabinetry with a focus on craftsmanship, material richness, and functional elegance.

The cabinet is constructed from richly figured Brazilian rosewood, showcasing deep brown tones with contrasting black veining. Its rectangular case sits atop a high, open base featuring squared legs and integrated stretchers, creating a balanced visual lightness against the dense material. The front is defined by two vertical doors with sculptural, carved solid rosewood handles that add tactile and visual interest. The design maintains symmetrical and disciplined proportions, highlighting the natural patterns of the rosewood veneers.

Inside, the cabinet is designed as a bar unit with a mirrored back panel, a black lacquered base, and suspended glass shelving supported by slender vertical steel rods. Below the shelving, a fitted rosewood bottle rack holds nine circular compartments. The mirrored surfaces enhance the sense of depth and reflectivity, while the metal supports introduce a subtle modernist detail. The interior elements harmonize with the exterior materials, sustaining a consistent and minimal aesthetic.

Torbjørn Afdal (1917–1999) was a leading figure in Norwegian mid-century furniture design, renowned for clean lines, exquisite woodwork, and meticulous attention to detail. His collaboration with Mellemstrands Møbelfabrikk, a manufacturer known for high standards and limited production, resulted in pieces that are highly collectible today. Afdal’s work is celebrated for balancing understated luxury with practical functionality.

This bar cabinet is a rare and exemplary expression of Norwegian modernism, combining traditional woodworking mastery with modern design principles. It remains in very good vintage condition, with well-preserved rosewood surfaces, original glass components, and minor wear consistent with its age.

The dimensions are 110 cm wide, 42 cm deep, and 124 cm high, approximately 43.3 inches wide, 16.5 inches deep, and 48.8 inches high.
