Information

The Krobo bench or side table, designed by Norwegian designer Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik in Norway during the 1960s, represents a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century modernism. Crafted from richly grained rosewood, the piece showcases a deep, warm tone with pronounced natural figuring across the top surface. Accompanying the bench are two original modular components: a pair of box-like plant stands and a vertical LP storage unit featuring four slots. These freestanding elements can be positioned freely along the bench surface, offering adaptability in both function and layout.

The bench itself rests on two sled-type legs with rounded inner corners, connected by a reinforcing stretcher that ensures structural stability. The tabletop edges are slightly raised, forming a narrow lip along the sides which frames the surface and enhances its functional character. The design emphasizes horizontal lines and minimal use of hardware, reflecting the clean, understated aesthetic typical of mid-century Scandinavian furniture.

Torbjørn Afdal (1917–1999) was among Norway’s most prominent postwar designers, known for his architectural approach to furniture design. His collaborations with Bruksbo produced many acclaimed pieces characterized by a balance of formal simplicity and material richness. Afdal’s use of luxurious woods, combined with functional forms, resulted in designs that were both elegant and practical.

The Krobo bench is one of Afdal’s most iconic creations, appreciated for its versatility and sculptural presence. Originally intended as a multifunctional platform, it serves well as seating, storage, or display, embodying the adaptable living concepts favored in Scandinavian interiors of the period.

The bench measures 200 cm in width, 37 cm in depth, and 34 cm in height to the top surface. Including the LP storage unit, the total height reaches approximately 68 cm. In imperial measurements, this corresponds to 78.7 inches wide, 14.6 inches deep, 13.4 inches high for the bench, and 26.8 inches high including the tallest modular component.
