Torbjørn Afdal dining chairs
This very rare set of six high-back dining chairs, model Darby, was designed by Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Nesjestranda Møbelfabrik in Norway during the 1950s. The chairs feature solid rosewood frames with elegantly tapered legs and slightly curved backrests, combining structural support with refined visual appeal. The seats and backrests are upholstered in cognac brown leather, which has developed a rich patina over time. The leather upholstery is detailed with visible stitching and secured using brass fittings, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship.
Torbjørn Afdal (1917–1999) was a prominent Norwegian designer known for his contributions to Scandinavian modernism. His work emphasized clean lines, functional elegance, and the use of high-quality materials. He collaborated extensively with Nesjestranda Møbelfabrik, a respected Norwegian furniture manufacturer noted for its expert woodworking and production of premium Scandinavian modern pieces.
The combination of rosewood and leather reflects the mid-century Scandinavian furniture ethos, which prioritized natural materials and a harmonious balance between aesthetics and comfort. The slightly inclined backrest and well-proportioned seat enhance ergonomic comfort, making these chairs both practical and visually sophisticated.
The set is in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of wear on both leather and wood surfaces consistent with their age. Each chair measures 47.5 cm in width, 55 cm in depth, and 95 cm in height (approximately 18.7 by 21.7 by 37.4 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches).
