Torsten Claesson rocking chairs
This rare pair of rocking chairs was designed by Torsten Claeson and produced by Steneby Hemslöjd in Sweden during the 1940s. Crafted from solid pine, the chairs embody the Scandinavian modern design ethos, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and the natural beauty of materials.
The chairs feature a sculptural form with a gently curved backrest carved from a single piece of pine, offering ergonomic comfort. The rockers display a robust yet elegant curvature, ensuring smooth and balanced motion. The legs and frame are joined using traditional carpentry techniques, reflecting the craftsmanship rooted in Swedish folk furniture traditions.
The original seat cushions remain intact, upholstered in a textured fabric of warm red or rust-brown tones. This upholstery provides a pleasing contrast to the deep, rich patina of the pine, which has matured gracefully over time.
Steneby Hemslöjd was renowned for blending traditional Swedish woodworking with modernist principles. Torsten Claeson’s designs emphasized durability, natural materials, and a connection to Sweden’s craft heritage, positioning these chairs as important examples of early Scandinavian modernism.
The chairs are in condition consistent with their age, showing visible patina and minor wear. Their dimensions are 58 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height (approximately 22.8 by 31.5 by 27.6 inches), with a seat height of 35 cm (13.8 inches).
