Information

This rare ceramic vase was designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1960s. Crafted from stoneware, the vase features a vertically fluted surface that runs uninterrupted from the base to the rim. The ovoid body tapers gently at both the base and top, with a rounded shoulder that leads to a narrow mouth. The glaze presents an off-white or ivory tone with subtle violet or pinkish undertones visible within the grooves, adding depth and a delicate vibrancy to the otherwise monochrome palette. A small, deliberate perforation just below the rim serves as a functional or decorative detail, characteristic of Lindstrand’s nuanced approach to ceramic design.

The vase is in very good condition, showing minor surface wear and slight discoloration consistent with age and handling, with no visible cracks or restorations. Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was a leading Swedish designer and artist renowned for his innovative work in glass and ceramics. Following his tenure at Orrefors and Kosta glassworks, he joined Upsala Ekeby in the 1950s, where he played a significant role in shaping the company’s modernist ceramic output. His work is noted for its clarity of form, structural rhythm, and a sculptural treatment of surface.

Upsala Ekeby was a prominent ceramic manufacturer in mid-20th-century Sweden, celebrated for close collaborations with key designers of the Scandinavian modernist movement. This vase exemplifies their postwar aesthetic, blending industrial precision with artisanal surface craftsmanship.

The vase measures 14 cm in diameter and 25.5 cm in height, approximately 5.5 inches wide by 10 inches tall.
