Vilhelm Wohlert wall lamps
This is a rare pair of wall lamps, model 204, designed by the Danish architect Vilhelm Wohlert and produced by Le Klint in Denmark during the 1950s. The model illustrates Wohlert’s sensitive approach to lighting design, where architectural precision is combined with Le Klint’s tradition of hand-folded shades. The lamps feature a sculptural balance between natural materials and geometric forms, resulting in a design that remains distinctly Scandinavian in its clarity and functionality.
The construction combines pinewood with a hand-pleated acrylic shade. The wooden bracket is shaped with a strong curvature that supports the shade while adding a warm, organic contrast to the sharp folds of the pleated material. The shade is executed in a soft cream tone, producing a diffused and atmospheric light when illuminated, while its folded structure creates depth and rhythm both in daylight and at night.
The condition is good with age-appropriate patina and signs of use. One of the shades has some minor broken parts, which are not visible when the lamp is mounted and in use. The pine shows rich grain and a warm tone, complementing the translucency of the acrylic. Both lamps retain their sculptural presence and original character.
Vilhelm Wohlert (1920–2007) was an influential Danish architect, best known for his long-term work on the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art north of Copenhagen, a project he dedicated several decades to. His designs often merge functionality with aesthetic sensitivity, and in his collaborations with Le Klint he applied his architectural understanding of space and light to domestic objects. Le Klint, established in 1943, is a Danish lighting manufacturer renowned for its pleated shades and collaborations with prominent architects and designers. Their work bridges craftsmanship and modernist design principles, making their lighting a central part of Scandinavian design history.
This pair belongs to the Scandinavian modern movement of the mid-20th century, where simplicity, material honesty, and a human-centered approach defined both architecture and interior objects. The design expresses a balance between functional lighting and decorative form, embodying the ideals of the period.
